watermelon love
Woof Wan-Bau’s “Watermelon Love”

As a vegan, I love watermelon. I loved watermelon since I was a little girl, but now I can eat it endlessly and with utter abandon.  “Watermelon Love” by Woof Wan-Bau illustrates this sweet fruit so well, with a seductive and giggly main character I find very cute.

Yummy, sweet, juicy and red.  What’s not to love?

Peace,
Melissa

Grown Ass Men Site Design

Grown Ass Men
Grown Ass Men Front Page

The GAM site is now complete! From design to technology, it’s a functional and fun site. The comedy troupe needed a way to show off their talents, in writing, photography and video. The site has a blog, a flash image gallery, and an extensive video player. With comprehensive backend technology, the group can update the content on the site without being a tied to a webmaster.

The design phase was fun - exploring the visual playground these guys wanted their user to experience as part of the GAM vision.  Once I had the front page and functionality down, we moved ahead quickly with the interior pages.  The result is a quirky website that is easy to use and full of regularly updated content.

Check it out here!

Melissa

Food Is The Cure

The Wager is over. I’m 12 pounds lighter, a pants and cup size smaller, and my body chemistry has been drastically altered.

Eat To Live is a fantastic guide to going vegan. I followed it carefully over the past six weeks, and read it from end to end. The results were just as Dr. Joel Fuhrman claimed - my taste buds changed, my skin looks brighter, and my body feels healthier and stronger. I actually crave fruits and veggies.

Cutting dairy out of my diet was the most drastic change. My mood swings around PMS have evened out or are gone completely. I tried a piece of cheese after the wager was over, as well as some chocolate, and both left me feeling blah. Immediately. So there is no question in my mind food follows function.

I’ve been a committed vegetarian for years, so the switch to veganism is a little harder but definitely easier on my body. I’m hoping to do a documentary with Dr. Fuhrman on his incredible diet plan and its healthy effects on everyone from diabetics to those fighting heart disease.

Vegan for Life - more than one meaning, many benefits!

Peace,
Melissa

Brad & Schliz
Schliz and Brad - America’s Next Producer Contestants

So I escaped from LA, via Virgin American.  Awesome airline, btw - your own media center and very comfy seats.  Incredibly friendly flight crew, however, they need more vegetarian/vegan choices on their in-flight menu.

Brad met up with fellow ANP cast mate Schliz, to talk biz and projects.  And to dish on the other cast members, and on who won.  Gwen, if you watched the series.  Awesome a woman won!

Dodgers
At a Dodgers Game (they lost to the Padres, which they would have never done if they stayed in BROOKLYN!)

In LA, I met a lot of talkers, flakers, phonies, wannabes and neverweres.  Like the cast of a horror movie, except funnier and sadder at the same time.  Bimbos with fake boobs bitching about women breast feeding and dudes looking for rich cougars topped my last evening out (walked out on that conversation). And who thought being a vegan would be difficult in LA?  Sunny, fluffy, friendly, slightly desperate and kind of dumb - LA is a needy starlet who wanes from bubbly to bitchy, but always remains a little flat in the aftertaste.

I’d be bi-coastal at best, and enjoy the weather and landscape of LA.  But the smog and smug I can do without.

Peace,
Melissa

Bocci and CheeseGramps On A Bike
Grampa on the beach

My buddy Chris aka Grampa let me crash at his wonderful place in Venice. Of all the places in LA I saw and stayed in, Venice is the spot that speaks to me the most. Full of artists and activists, it’s artsy vibe is crushed each weekend with tourists and sun seekers. From the graffiti park to Muscle Beach, the strip is alive with culture struggling to keep its head above gentrification waters.

If I ever move west, I see landing in San Francisco or Venice Beach. Both have the same powerful and peaceful vibe that fosters the best in thought and art.

Gassed Up
The Brothers Gallo Gassing Up

Six years ago today, on a similarly sunny and cloudless Tuesday, reality took a face plant.  Full impact into NYC’s downtown.  I almost forgot.

But I didn’t.  I flinched, at the sight of it again on tv.  Who would think the images in motion still inflict such instant visceral reactions?  The sense memory most triggered is smell - the scent of burnt and destroyed things that hung on for months.

In LA, I treat the Brothers Gallo to an oxygen bar at the Kodak Theater.  It’s a big mall, where the Oscars are held.  To say I was underwhelmed simplifies my reaction.  I see the mall culture connection, even more so, to major media.  Keep it empty and addictive.

Get Higher Edu-ma-cation Here

The trip to La-la land is going rather well.  Weird, but smooth.  I am starting to appreciate my mother’s choices as I age - can’t imagine growing up here.  Perhaps I’m too hard core NYC - fast, feisty and frenetic.  The slow pace is nice, but it leaves me itching to get stuff done.

Vote for VJ Miixxy

Hi Peeps!

Once again, DJ Mag has opened its 2007 Top 20 VJs online polls. An international audience can now vote for their favorite VJ, which this lil’ digipixi hopes is me!

http://www.djmag.com/index.php?op=top20vj

You have to vote for 5 VJs, not just one (daring you to show your VJ knowledge). I would suggest the following fabu pixelites:

Holly Daggers - the sexiest vixen behind her dual pioneers

VJ Sputnik - We miss in him in NYC but love him still from afar

Giles Hendrix - behind his chill exterior there is so much creative and tech knowledge

Missy Galore - rainbow bright goddess of feedback

Joshua Goldberg - the brilliant academic of the VJ set - brains, programming braun and visual beauty

Daniel Vatsky - suave style and retina popping visuals

Jay Smith - Dude made the VIDITAUR - MADE IT - props…

Ben Neill - Man mixing machine with the brass section, making video as alive as his music (one of the first true DVJs/VJ musicians around)

Berkoy - so subtle and lovely

Chika - mistress mixer extraordinaire

Downtown LA

I’m off this Tuesday to LA for 10 days, as I shoot the Brothers Gallo for their online pilot. Should be an interesting trip, and it will be my first trip back since, well, I was a wee baby. I was born in LA, Hollywood to be exact.

Keep checking back for updates and images!

Peace,
Melissa
