Industry as Pygmalion

The beauty industry sees all photography subjects as raw clay to be molded. Even beautiful young women who are already amazing to look at.

So don’t be discouraged, ladies, when the image on the magazine makes you feel just not quite so. That feeling comes from recognizing you are not looking a human, but an edited version of a human, that is not quite so, viscerally.

You are absolutely, genuinely, adorably and honestly quite so, quite imperfectly you.

Melissa

Today was a branding blowout kind of day. Four different brands for different sites, yet all related, to one person - design client Bradley Gallo. A colleague and good friend, Brad ended up on America’s Next Producer this spring and we’ve rushed to get these sites up for the season’s launch. (more…)

shattered
By Fotofrog on Flickr

I’ve started dating again. My last relationship fizzled in and out, off and on, for a few years. Whether it was convenience or fear, I kept going back to the Well. He was a mighty fine Well, but our hearts are pointing in different directions. So recently, we decided to stop seeing each other, but we still remain great friends and do work together from time to time.

So…so…so…I tested the waters. Still full of bizarre sucker fish and bull sharks. Against my better judgment, and a past history that clearly showed online dating is a losing proposition, I went on a couple of dates with different men. My mother told me never date actors, lawyers, musicians or politicians. I went out with both a musician and a lawyer, in one week. Hahaha…tragic, both dates. At least I can laugh. (more…)

I created two versions of a Mandala video art experiment.  One is the entire color spectrum, the other is created of hues of love - pink, gold and white.  Still wondering which version is more interesting.

Let me know what YOU think.  Bonus points if you can identify the song used to animate the Mandalas by.

Peace,
Melissa

I had the honor of working with Tish and Snooky of Manic Panic on a video piece for their 30th Anniversary event this past weekend at Fontana’s.  The result was a fantastic piece of video that spans their DYI career in cosmetics and Punk Rock!

Melissa in Lisbon
On our way to the boat…

I have been terribly busy lately, unable to sit myself down and write up a good long entry on Lisbon (however, I did manage to get the photos up!). I cannot express enough how wonderful an experience it was - from the gracious warmth of our hosts - Alex, Teté, Patricia, Vasco, Jose, the entire staff at Chapito - to the amazing filmmakers I met at the festival - Brendan, Gerry, Daniel, Lorcan, Bru, Nicolai - I doubt I could have had a better time.

Me and Vasco
Me and Vasco, my Lisbon little brother

From my arrival into Lisbon, to the last morning, Vasco was my transportation and my guide to the city. He was an adorable guy, who explained the city to me through the eyes of a local passionate about his city, his culture. He carted me to and from the hotel to Chapito - a circus school cum restaurant cum social activism collective cum cultural center. (more…)
