As a filmmaker, I’m always on the search for images to help tell my story for me. Interview footage is often dry and directors who come to edit with me don’t have the time or budget to shoot extensive b-roll. That’s really too bad - b-roll is worth the time and effort, and the cost of stock images or footage to cover boring or badly shot talking heads.
On the last production I edited, the co-producer found an incredibly affordable stock image site - Dreamstime.com. The images are excellent quality and priced well below Getty or Corbis, even for broadcast use.
This is also great for the photographer, because their images will get sold more often. Rather than a few expensive buyers, hundreds of image makers will spend the few dollars to get a high quality image. It’s the iTunes model - make it cheap, accessible and cut out the middle man’s massive cut.
I’m going to sign up as a photographer soon, so my images should be online for sale shortly.
Peace,
Melissa

Butterflies in Honduras - M. Ulto
After much drama, loss of equipment and lack of payment from a poorly contracted partnership, I’ve regrouped and moved my edit suite out to Brooklyn. I’m fully up and open for editing, 24/7, at this new location, in Williamsburg. Its a cute little space with enough room for 2 editors (I share the space with another very talented editor, who is also available for work).
I’m available for editing, writing, directing, producing, shooting and consulting. I’m also available as a photographer and web designer.
Please check out my online reel.
Updates on projects:
- finished the edit and the trailer for Death Before Dishonor (feature documentary), to be released November 2006 by Vivendi/Universal, through RuffNation Films
- finished fixes on The Art of Love & Struggle (feature documentary), looking for distribution and festivals to send the film to
- working on screenplay for “The Inventor”, a fiction feature, with writing partners Barbara & Ray

Pink Core - M. Ulto
Depression sucks.
I’m wishing I could sleep for days until the clouds pass.
Just sit back and let the universe do its work on me.
Heal enough to stand, take deep breaths without suffocating, without pain.
The energy seems not to exist.
Waiting for my core to heal, and start spinning again.
The last kick to my breastplate knocked the motion out of me.
Sucker punch to the solar plexus kind of thing.
Inside out fearing much in shallow puffs, I think of how to get free again.
Cocoon spinning, thinking, pondering, wondering, until nothing expands.
I’m waiting for the boredom with depression to come, so I can move on.
Broke, broken, breaking down, busted.
Peace,
Melissa

Mother & Son, Sister & Child - M. Ulto
While wars rage, greed and egocentric behavior flourishes, hate grows and misery spreads, there is the peace of small moments to reflect on.
Love in a touch - the touch of an eyelash on a child’s cheek - butterfly kisses.
Peace in a touch - the soothing of cool air blown over a scraped knee.
The sound of birds and wind in the trees reminds me to breathe, slow, even.
The sights and sounds of water lapping at the shore, the pull of tides, to walk in tandem with.

Sophia Stewart, Mother of The Matrix
I watched “V for Vendetta” last night, and was moved, but also wary. The art is excellent, but the people behind the art are flawed, deeply flawed. The Wachowski Brothers seem to be very derivative in their works. Some have accused them of outright plagiarism, including Grant Morrison, creator of The Invisibles comic book series, and Sophia Stewart, Mother of The Matrix.
Researching the possibility that the Hollywood duo would make their career on stolen works, I came across strong evidence that yes, indeed, the Wachowski made a pretty penny off of Ms. Stewart’s work. No credit, no mention of her The Third Eye script, from which not only The Matrix, but also The Terminator originated from. Details, tag lines, key sound bytes, storylines, plots, symbology, philosophy - she can relate it all, very easily, back to her script. She has an in-depth knowledge of the woven truths and historical references (to gods, scripture, magic and folklore) in the films. I read on and on and feel very deeply Sophia Stewart did give birth to this tale.
Part of the making and submitting promos to current.tv included making a promo bump - 15 seconds of fame, as seen by the media maker. I took the self-plug option and made it about art. It’s bubbly, colorful and a 15 second trip into my psyche. I’ll post the piece that was aired shortly (its 3 month run is over).
Peace,
Melissa
