Art & Apathy Shoot – Shooter’s Day Off
I woke up very late and wandered downtown, searching for wireless. I found it at Cafe Rimon. Hours later, chatting online with my sister and other friends, I found I cannot update my blog because port 21 is blocked. Free wireless but no ftp. I’ll just have to wait until we get somewhere more net friendly. The free wireless – its wonderful. HINT HINT NYC!!! (oh how i wish)
The city is lovely and hilly. It reminds me a bit of San Francisco with its hilliness. Almost everyone speaks English. I heard a lot of American accents along with the middle eastern strum of Hebrew and Arabic.
I read the news online that Hurricane Rita is approaching Texas and turning into a category five. Is it karma? Is it our blatant disregard for the planet? Perhaps both. We’ve created the monsters around us with disregard, avarice, and greed. With wind and solar power, bio-diesel and methane from our massive waste output, why do we need to continue with non-renewable, environmentally destructive fuel sources? Do we need 3 or 4 cars for the middle class? Do we need 3 or 4 TVs in our homes? Do we need lights on 24/7 in cities all over the world? Sacrifices, people – sacrifices! We must be able to stop acquiring, hoarding, stockpiling and learn to take only what we need from our planet. When people have homes with 24 bedrooms and there are apartments and rickety homes housing several generations in poor urban and rural areas, there is SOMETHING WRONG! We are out of balance. Share? Trust? Learn? Believe in the path of every human, not just the people with your skin color, your class, your education level, your religion, your political party. The other is us.
I know I sound like a hippie tree hugger. So what? Hippies in intent have a mission and its admirable. I’m not a hippie – my memories of my mother are enough to keep me out of tie dye and communes. I’m more of a digital nomad. I’m believer in technology – used the right way. I’ve spent time in BIG MEDIA and BIG TECH, and see how it can be misused. But if used correctly, the internet and emergent technologies can be the great equalizer. Give groups that can’t afford PR a website, and poof – they are out there, educating, connecting, discussing and changing minds. There is so much we don’t know about each other. The fear of the unknown in the upper white class is evident more and more. There is a scrambling, clutching, grasping to the UWC folks I’ve met, in between the blasé boredom they exude. So much opportunity and so little motivation. Except for money and a bigger house. Another car. A trip. An expensive glass of wine. A snort, a toke, a cigar. Perhaps some fame for themselves or their kin. And still, so unhappy.
“If you want to know what love can do, open up your arms, you won’t regret it. I got a mighty kind of love…”
Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings
Open up, people, open up. Sometimes we’ll take a hit. But compassion, its contagious. We only learn to let it grow by letting it flow.
